Embryo Testing

What Is Embryo Testing, Its Benefits, Why, and How Is It Done

Embryo testing is an important procedure for analyzing genetic and chromosomal disorders.

This application, also known as a preimplantation genetic diagnosis screening test (PGD, PGS), allows the chromosome structure, number, and genes of the embryo to be examined. Embryo genetic testing is one of the most important procedures for in vitro fertilization treatments.

These tests, which are performed to detect chromosomal anomalies of embryos obtained by the IVF method, are important in determining whether healthy embryos are obtained. These methods are used to reduce the risk of anomalies such as Down syndrome and to evaluate the genetic compatibility of embryos. Frozen embryo genetic testing and other methods can be used to determine embryo health.

Such tests are frequently used in the IVF process. Regular screening and tests are performed to increase the chances of success of the treatment method. Many different methods are preferred in this context to ensure the formation of healthy embryos.

What is the Embryo Test?

Embryo testing is a test used to detect chromosomal abnormalities in embryos obtained through in vitro fertilization (IVF). It is very helpful in determining whether the embryos are healthy and suitable for a healthy pregnancy. Embryo genetics can be examined and its suitability for pregnancy can be determined by these methods.

These tests should definitely be applied in terms of early diagnosis of genetic diseases and chromosomal abnormalities. It is important for a successful pregnancy process to determine the risks in advance. Success rates can be increased with genetic examinations in embryos.

Embryo tests are usually divided into several different groups. These tests are used for screening and diagnostic purposes. It should be applied as a useful method in determining the success rate of IVF treatment.

Why is embryo testing performed?

The main purpose of embryo testing is to examine the embryo genetically and to determine whether there are chromosomal abnormalities. These tests can be performed for many reasons. They are methods used to examine and determine the genetic or chromosomal structure of the fetus. In couples undergoing IVF treatment, the success rate of the treatment should be monitored, especially with such tests. In general terms, the purpose of embryo testing is briefly as follows:

  • Determination of genetic disease carriage and risk analyses,
  • Reducing the risk of chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome,
  • Detection of anomalies incompatible with life,
  • Examination of the genetic compatibility and health of the embryo, etc.

Embryo tests are generally performed with two different methods. These can be classified as PGD-A and PGD-M. Analysing the health of the embryo with such tests in advance against a genetic disease originating from the mother and father candidates is among the important issues for a healthy pregnancy.

Who is a Suitable Candidate for Embryo Testing?

Embryo testing is an option for couples planning embryo transfer by in vitro fertilization. It helps to reduce the risk of chromosomal abnormalities and increase the chance of a healthy pregnancy. The tests to be performed before those who have a urine test after embryo transfer are one of the important issues in determining the success rates of the treatments.

It is possible to apply the embryo test to the following people in general:

  • Those with genetic risk factors in their family history,
  • Expectant mothers over 35 years of age,
  • Those who experience recurrent miscarriages,
  • Previous pregnancy results,
  • Those at risk of chromosomal abnormalities in the parents, etc.

Such tests are important for anyone considering a healthy pregnancy. After embryo transfer, it is very important to follow up the process regularly with methods such as urine tests.

For embryo testing, especially expectant mothers in advanced age groups are taken into consideration. On the other hand, these tests are performed for parents with a family history of genetic disorders and suspicion. Since genetic weaknesses can affect the immune system and all other functions, embryo tests must be performed to ensure that such risks are fully identified in advance.

What is the procedure for embryo testing?

Embryo tests are performed using different methods. In this context, it is important which methods will be preferred. Application methods also vary according to the methods to be used. These tests help to determine the health of the embryo and provide a healthier pregnancy.

In IVF treatment, embryo genetic testing can be performed on embryos that reach the 5th day. In order to analyze embryo genetics, embryos are expected to reach the blastocyst stage. The fact that there are many different tests reveals the diversity of the application procedures.

On the other hand, a follow-up process with procedures such as urine tests for 11 days after embryo transfer should also be applied. With the PGD-A method, the chromosome number and structure of the embryos are examined to detect chromosomal abnormalities. The PGD-M method examines whether the embryos carry a specific genetic disease. These methods, also known as preimplantation genetic diagnosis, can be successfully applied.

What are the Advantages of Embryo Testing?

The biggest advantage of embryo testing is the detection of genetic disorders and increasing the success rate in pregnancy. Examining the chromosome and genetic structures of embryos obtained within the scope of IVF treatment can determine the success rates in treatments. It also enables the embryo to be recognized in advance against a possible genetic disorder. The main advantages of embryo tests are briefly as follows:

  • It provides early diagnosis of genetic and chromosome problems in the embryo,
  • It ensures the prevention of risky pregnancies,
  • It ensures a healthier pregnancy,
  • It helps in the prevention of recurrent miscarriages,
  • It can reduce the risk of chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome and Patau syndrome, etc.

For a healthy pregnancy and IVF treatment, embryo tests are absolutely necessary. Such tests also provide psychological and emotional relief and increase the motivation of the couple. Considering the 5-day embryo transfer urine test and other applications, the success rate of the treatment can be relatively determined.

WHAT IS OVARIAN CYST?

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs or vesicles seen inside the ovary. Normally, during each menstrual period, a cyst called a follicle, which carries the egg cell and can reach 3 cm in size, forms in the ovaries. Then this cyst cracks and the egg is released. In young girls with ovulation problems, normal or physiological follicle cysts that cannot rupture can grow every month and reach 5-10 cm, while small numbers of 0.5-1 cm in size, which we call polycystic ovaries, can be seen in series. Apart from these functional cysts, benign or malignant ovarian cysts can also be seen in all age groups.

Except for the most common functional ovarian cysts, cysts can be benign or malignant tumoral cysts. In addition, as a result of infection, abscess-shaped cysts may occur, which is usually accompanied by pain and high fever.

FAQ

Embryo genetic testing or preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is performed when one or both parents who want to have a child have an inherited genetic disorder. This type of genetic disorder is performed in order for couples to have healthy embryos. By looking at the genetic characteristics of the embryos, it can be observed whether they carry genetic diseases and whether they will form a healthy pregnancy.

In embryo genetic screening tests, the genetic health of the fetus or embryo is examined. Certain genetic diseases or chromosomal abnormalities are detected. Within the scope of these tests, details such as chromosome number, genetic diseases, and sex determination can be examined. With embryo genetic tests applied in IVF treatment, the number, structure, and shape of genes are examined.

Genetic tests to be applied for the embryo do not harm. PGD or biopsy procedures can be applied harmlessly. As a result of the tests, healthy embryos are transferred to the womb of the expectant mother. By determining the health of the embryo, the chance of IVF success and healthy pregnancy are provided. Healthy embryos suitable for embryo transfer can be selected in this way. The risk of miscarriage and other risks can also be prevented in this way.
